2016 – The Year In Numbers Part I

The counting has been done, the decorations are down and the final figures for the home entertainment market in all its varying forms for 2016 have been released by such august bodies as BASE and ERA.

2.2 – the growth in percentage points in consumer spend in the video category in 2016

2.25 billion – the total value of the video category in 2016

49 – the percentage of the overall market given over to ownership

51 – the  percentage of the market given over to renting or streaming

23 – the percentage growth in digital video services in 2016

1.309 million – the value in pounds of digital video revenues in 2016

16.9 – the percentage all in physical revenues over the past 12 months

893.6 million – the value in pounds of the physical DVD and Blu-ray market in 2016

5.9 – the percentage growth in the overall audio visual market in 2016

10.98 billion – the value in pounds of the audio visual market in 2016

2.3 million – the amount of units sold across all formats by the year’s top earner, Star Wars: The Force Awakens

51.5 – the percentage of Star Wars The Force Awakens units sold on DVD

34.4 – the percentage of Star Wars: The Force Awakens units sold on Blu-ray

14.1 – the share in percentage terms of Str Wars: The Force Awakens units sold on Blu-ray

1 million – the magic units sold total topped by both Spectre and Deadpool

250,000 – the total number of digital copies sold by both Spectre and Deadpool (approximately)

20.2 – Universal’s total share of the market in 2016 in volume terms, making it number one distributor

18.5 – Universal’s total share of the market in 2016 in value terms

38 – the number of Universal titles that sold more than 100,000 units in 2016. These included top selling children’s feature The Secret Life Of Pets

Three – the number of Universal titles released in 2015 that passed the 1 million mark last year – they were Minions, Jurassic World and Fifty Shades Of Grey

Four – the number of children’s franchises that passed the 100,000 mark in 2016, including Paw Patrol Pups And The Pirate Treasure

20.8 – Fox’s share of the Blu-ray market in 2016 in volume terms, making it top HD distributor

21.2 – Fox’s share of the Blu-ray market in 2016 in volume terms

96 – the number of 4K UHD titles released in 2016

11,000 – the number of units sold by Deadpool on 4K UHD, making it the year’s top seller

470,000 – the number of units sold of the fifth season of Game Of Thrones

1 million – the total units sold of Game Of Thrones titles in 2016, outdoing the 891,000 sold the previous year

130,000 – the number of units sold of Planet Earth II in a mere four weeks at the end of the year

130,000 – the number of units sold of The Night Manager in 2016

54,000 – the number of units sold of ITV’s Victoria, the commercial arm of the broadcaster also sold 40,000 copies of Poldark in the past year…
