Top 10 HBO Greatest Moments

To tie in with our HBO special edition of the newsletter, we thought we’d celebrate the best of the company so far… So we put our heads together with staffers at HBO’s UK home enetertainment arm to come up with our 10 favourite moments from HBO programmes…

1. The Last Ever Scene Of The Sopranos…

Oh, where shall we start with this? Viewers were left puzzled, bewildered, frustrated or delighted by the final scene of the programme. It sparked intense online debate – heck, people have written book-length articles about its meaning and finer points – and, before Glee, it brought Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’ back into the public eye…

2. Christopher’s Intervention On The Sopranos

Possibly this writer’s finest moment in The Sopranos, where the extended friends and family try to stage an intervention to get Christopher to give up drugs and booze. Hilarious stuff.

3. Omar’s Final Scene  In The Wire

Look, we’re trying not to give away too many secrets here right, and we’ve said spoiler alert at the top, but if you haven’t seen The Wire yet, then it serves you right. Omar was the people’s champion in The Wire, its conscience and moral compass and yet he was a vicious killer… His departure was thus all the more shocking…

4. Bunk and McNulty’s Crime Scene Investigation

In which two of the fans’ favourites from The Wire assess a murder scene using just one expletive, the F-word conveying the different emotions and elements they find, repeating it time and time again.

5. Larry David and Ben Stiller

Curb Your Enthusiasm has had its fair share of guest appearances by Hollywood stars playing themselves, but the best has to be Ben Stiller. The Zoolander star constantly bickered with David as they were rehearsing to appear together in The Producers. The highlight of their feud was Stiller’s birthday party, where our hero turned up without a present and ended up inadvertently stabbing Stiller in the eye with a cocktail stick…

6. Beloved Aunt

Another Curb Your Enthusiasm moment, from its first series. Larry David upsets the whole of his wife’s family after trying to do the right thing and leave an In Memoriam notice to their beloved aunt. Unfortunately the newspaper misspells it, replacing the A with a C. It outrages them and, naturally, Larry carries the can.

7. Game Of Thrones Season One Finale

Rated by those in the know as one of the finest series finales ever, we wouldn’t dream of spoiling it for our readers, but let’s just say, that it was a stirring and rousing end to the season…

8. The final episode of SIx Feet Under

One of the most ambitious – and best – final episodes of a series in the history of US television, this followed the lives of its key characters to their conclusions in a series of flash forwards. Even thinking about it makes us cry…

9. “Greektown Belongs To Us”

One of the finest moments in Boardwalk Empire saw Al Capone (played chillingly by Brit Stephen Graham) and Jimmy Darmody execute some rvals. As he completes the final killing, Jimmy utters the immortal line…

10. “Work drugs”

Basically, you could have any moment from either of the two seasons of the fantastic HBO comedy Eastbound & Down, starring Danny McBride as failed baseball star Kenny Powers, but we’d plump for the one where he does some ecstasy, dances like a madman, throws up and collapses…
