No Trouble In Stores
Back in a previous life, on a now defunct magazine, we had this great idea to have a regular monthly feature entitled “this month’s dead bloke”, to let store managers and retail know whose titles they should be bringing to the fore in store, following their untimely demise.
In the end taste prevented us from launching it (as well as deadlines too, it must be added). Now, if we at The Raygun were planning on doing a feature on a similar thing now, we’d definitely be covering Norman Wisdom. It always seems less distastetful if you do it after someone’s had a good innings like Wisdom, who died earlier this year at the grand old age of 95-years-old and the sales of ITV Studios Home Entertainment’s lavish Wisdom box set have rocketed – something like 60,000 plus units have been sold in the past two months.
Now ITV has taken the wise step of taking Norman on to TV, in an ad voiced by Richard Briers, who recorded different versions for different tagged retailer versions. The ad is due to air on ITV stations from now in the run-up to Christmas and will capitalise perfectly on the renewed interest in the comedy legend’s work in the run up to Christmas.
As ITV Studios Home Entertainment’s Kate Walker said on last week’s newsletter: “We will be running a 10 second ad campaign on ITV1 and ITV3 in December to inspire gifters to choose the Norman Wisdom Collection this Christmas. The ad is voiced by the marvellous Richard Briers, who had actually worked with Norman himself and seemed pretty chuffed to be recording the ad for us. He was also very pleased with a copy for himself.”
